I am 'n MTN Nokia subscriber since 1997, with the same number since 083 4545 730. At the moment I experience a problem with my phone, don't want to charge properly. SO I CAN'T USE IT AT THE MOMENT!I took it to the provider and they said it must go "in" for a month. What must I do without a selphone for a month?? Why can't the thing last for at least two years, my son's Nokia keyboard packup in 6 months, he had to pay to get it fixed, he use an old other brands phone at the moment and he is on a contract. You say we don't pay for the phone, but for airtime, its nonsens. As a subscriber I expect a phone to last for 2 years, as you expect me to pay my contract for 2 years. like a did for 12 years now. My first 2 phones last 4 years, the children used it, when we upgraded. Now it don't last the first half of the contract? Our family have 4 MTN Nokia contracts, and we seriously looking to change now.

Re: Nokia N97 2.0: now with iSync support

This is awesome - I am very close to getting a MBP - hopefully this week :)

Re: A couple Afrihost should implement to fix its partly inaccessible Client Zone

Hi Gian

Thanks for dropping by and commenting. I think these two changes/fixes will make it a lot easier to keep connected and perhaps even reduce the load on your accounts people. The lady I spoke to yesterday who reconnected me had to wade through a lot of payment confirmations to find mine. Giving customers the ability to get to their control panel and pay their outstanding bills and have their accounts reconnected in the process must reduce the load your accounts people are carrying too.

Re: A couple Afrihost should implement to fix its partly inaccessible Client Zone

Hi Paul.

Thanks for the post and your suggestions - sincerely appreciate all feedback that helps us improve.

I have spoken to our developers as you are supposed to be able to get into your Client Zone after you are capped and out of bandwidth. They believe they know what caused the problem you encountered and this glitch should be ironed out within the next day or so.

We are also working on a system that will enable you to pay for any outstanding invoice via the Client Zone by credit card - This is definitely a shortcoming of our Client Zone at the moment but the good news is it should be developed and integrated within the next 2 weeks or so.

Thanks again.

Gian
CEO, Afrihost

Re: Google Maps South Africa launch

No idea, they definitely dodged that question when I asked again afterwards. I suspect we will see the functionality trickle down eventually but the good stuff will be reserved for Android devices for now.

Re: Is history repeating itself with Nokia?

Hi Jim

I should preface everything I write by saying I am not an expert on all things mobile but I do remember a time when Windows Mobile was the dominant smartphone OS. That dominance hasn't exactly endured and as you point out, Symbian is the dominant platform at the moment. That being said, it is slipping and both the iPhone and Android devices are gaining market share. They may be pretty small right now but strong, smaller contenders have a tendency to grow and become more dominant.

As for cheaper devices, comparing the current generation of Android smartphones to the XpressMusic and E-series ranges isn't fair. Android devices have far better UIs and possibly even improved functionality, and they really aren't priced too badly for what you are getting. A better comparison might be between something like the HTC Hero and my N97. I think the Hero is far better in some respects and is a lot cheaper.

You are right, I was being a little too cavalier by equating Nokia to Symbian. They are distinct although the Symbian platform has become almost synonymous with Nokia. We really don't hear much about other manufacturers sporting the Symbian platform.

Re: Google Maps South Africa launch

Any idea when this functionality will be available for Symbian?

Re: Google Maps South Africa launch

I am super dependent on Google Map. So history repeating? How?

Devices cheaper on Android? I don't think so, look at the Nokia XpressMusic range or E63 phone, full featured smartphones and very cheap, with Symbian's single processor approach allowing a low BoM.

Finally, you're conflating Nokia and Symbian, Nokia make phones that don't use Symbian (N900 and the series 40 range for instance), and the Symbian OS is available in phones from more manufacturers than Nokia.

Re: Connected in SA: a few cool connectivity options

You're welcome!

Re: Connected in SA: a few cool connectivity options

Thanks for the article, it came at a time when I was looking to change providers. It does somethings very well but clearly the focus is on collaboration.

If email were invented today, it would look more like TrulyMail. Here is a company which re-invented email. Sure they have few users but that will change with time.

We all know the problems with email: You don't know if/when your messages are delivered, too much spam, your messages are not really private, etc. TrulyMail solves these problems.

The only problem is that it is a complete replacement for email (it actually has nothing to do with email and uses its own servers). Their latest release includes integration with email to make the transition a bit easier for those of us who live in the real world.

Still, I'm looking forward to Wave going public. I hope they don't keep it in beta for seven years like gmail was.

Re: Virtually there …

You’re so welcome!
