When geeks turn on jeeks who turn on everyone else

Started by pauljacobson · 3 months ago

I loved the Joburg 27dinner on 27 January.  In part it was because I got to speak and in part because I was there in a semi-official capacity as the soon to be chief chili of chilibean media (which hadn’t been announced yet).  For the most part it was great to have a bunch ... Continue reading »

  • You know Paul, it's not like it wasn't obvious that this would happen based on the history of the event. I am glad I wasn't there, it would have just made me dislike Cape Town even more.
  • I like Cape Town and would hate to see this one experience derail the whole thing there. I like the idea of the 27dinners but I think some thought should be given to what the locals want to see in a CT 27dinner otherwise the dinners will never really develop the following that could make them something awesome to be part of.
  • The next 27 Dinner in CT is blogger only, but not geek only. Biiiiiiig difference. In fact it will be no less, and possibly more so, marketing oriented...

Never once have I said that 27 is a geek dinner. It's a dinner, with geeks.
  • I think it's way too quick (and easy) to base the perceived relative success or failure on just one event, immediately jumping to geographical location and stereotypical personality types in those locations.

It could've been anything from the venue, time (sundown is at a different time), speakers, topical content, and so forth (it could've been the influence of those that were at the Joburg meeting sending bad vibes, for all we know).

And, even if it were that, there are tools to break up groups and inviting discussion between participants - and these aren't yet incorporated into the programme.

I guess we're learning that there aren't just marketers and entrepreneurs and technies - there are particular skillsets such as facilitation that are necessary to conquer the world...

  • I agree with Tertia Albertyn. The negativity is a bit much.
